LadyDot Review: Parov Stelar – Candy Girl
And you, which version of the Electro Swing master’s new song do you like better?
Parov Stelar – “Candy Girl” (+ “Late Night Mix”)
You don’t even know how long I’ve been waiting for a moment to review one of the tracks by an artist whose work had a significant influence on shaping my musical taste. My adventure with Electro Swing started when I was in high school (that is, a very, very long time ago :)) and “Catgroove” was the first track by Parov Stelar that I heard.
Once, when I was at university, I wrote a review of “The Princess, Pt. 2”, but soon afterwards I deleted it from my computer because I was ashamed to publish it on the Internet (although the professor who read it was very pleased with it).
Now, when writing for Electro Swing Thing, I believe in doing it right, and I’m happy to share my thoughts on various songs with you. So this time I have no more excuses – here is a review of a new song by Parov Stelar – “Candy Girl”. This is the 41st episode of my reviews, which makes me even more excited!
There Is No Discussion About Tastes!
I could talk about Parov Stelar‘s works for hours. I know his songs really well and I can admit that, despite being very inspired by the music genre called downtempo, this artist likes to go back to his roots and still creates fresh Electro Swing for us. Yes, there may be more electro than swing in some songs, but does it really bother us? Not really in my opinion! I have written about this before and it is a completely normal phenomenon that we can see over the years. This genre simply evolves and changes a little.
You’re probably wondering why I allowed myself such a long introduction. I’m already explaining: “Candy Girl” can be listened to in two versions. One is definitely more calm, with downtempo elements, and “Late Night Mix” is typically Electro Swing. This way each of you can choose the option that suits you best!
Maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but in “Candy Girl” I hear motives inspired by Balkan music (probably because of that distinctive trumpet). All these elements are complemented by strong bass and delicate, subtle melorecitation of Vallemarie. All this makes “Candy Girl” a real, sweet pleasure to listen to!
Late Night Mix – What Time Of Day Would You Listen To This Version?
As I mentioned earlier, Parov Stelar prepared two versions of “Candy Girl’ for us: a standard one and a ‘Late Night Mix’. And when I listen to the second one, which is a bit more energetic, I think that it will be good not only for late night, but especially in the morning, when you need an extra dose of energy for the whole day! It’s much more danceable and, above all, contains all the elements we like most in the works of Parov Stelar.
We are talking about a faster tempo (the beginning reminds me a lot of “Jimmy’s Gang”, which I just adore!), elements of club music and… that brilliant trumpet solo. You can hear it at the end of the song. When I hear this theme, I immediately recall the Parov Stelar concert in 2017, for which I went to Budapest specially. Darkness on the stage and only one spotlight directed at the trumpeter who passionately plays his solo… It was one of the most beautiful moments in my life! :)
All in all, I’m very glad that it was thanks to “Candy Girl” that I remembered this fantastic event. I wonder, if I will have similar feelings after the concert on Torwar in Warsaw in November? It remains to be seen. I hope that the new album of Parov Stelar will be a real Electro Swing masterpiece. And that I’ll proudly add it to the list of my other favourite albums: “The Princess, Pt. 2”, “The Art of Sampling” and, of course, “The Burning Spider”.

Biography – LadyDot
Anna (LadyDot) was born in ’94, but always felt she came from the Golden Twenties. “Polka” in Polish means “girl from Poland”, so she’s “Polka in polka dots”. She loves vintage style and spontaneous travels around Europe. But her greatest love (apart from her husband) is of course music, especially Electro Swing. On her own Blog www.jawizeruk.pl she writes about various music genres. She is a copywriter, so writing is her strong point. Anna likes singing (not only in the shower!) and cooking (especially Italian and Hungarian cuisine).
